I often ask my readers or video viewers for feedback and ideas on what ‘they’ would like to see me write (or talk) about. Last week I was asked for some easy steps on how to get started doing videos. So here are five steps that will start you down the path to an effective video marketing campaign.
1. Teleprompter or no teleprompter? I started with a teleprompter but found this approach to be more hassle than it’s worth. Here is what I do now. Mostly I keep my videos short – and shoot from the cuff. For longer videos I let people know that I may have to check my notes so that I don’t miss anything important that I want to share – your viewers understand. And for the longer videos I also have my notes open in a word or google doc and after beginning the video click on the doc and it brings the notes down to eye level. I use this as a guide only or you can tell I am reading.
2.Set up/pick your space – Although you can easily get started with a smartphone and natural light, consider upgrading to a video camera. I use natural light, face a window and my camera is a Logitech.
3. Create an editorial calendar – One of the biggest hurdles of creating video content is simply adding it to your calendar. What you schedule is important and what is important gets done. It’s important to make video marketing a priority and get your team on board. Start with the basics and then work your way out to more niche topics. Take a look at your best content (or even a competitor’s content) that seems to be resonating well within your industry. Use this as a guide to create videos and blogs.
4. Understand your needs and set a goal – Like any other marketing strategy, you need to start with a goal. What are you trying to accomplish? Is it engagement or a promotion that you are currently offering? This will allow you to measure the success and ROI of your video campaign.
5. Start – Once you begin shooting, go from start to finish (as many times as it takes) to ensure you have a great little piece of footage. Over time, you’ll find that you get better at communicating with a camera, and it becomes like having a conversation. Focus on being yourself and sharing your message.
And most importantly know it will NEVER be perfect because there is NO perfect. It is always a little scary and uncomfortable when you first start out … but trust me when I say you need to just go for it – so EMBRACE the FEAR and do it anyways!
